Experiment: Chemical Kinetics


    The JAVA applet below simulates the gaseous reactions

2 A   —›   B    and     2 A   —›  B

in a closed container. The molecules A and A have the same empirical formula and the same atom-to-atom bonding sequence. However, the spatial arrangement of the atoms differs in the two molecules. Such molecules are called stereoisomers. The cis and trans isomers of 1,2-difluorodiazene are examples of stereoisomers. The molecules B and B are also stereoisomers.

    Select the number of A molecules (40 or 80), the energy of activation ( Low or High ), and the temperature (200 or 400) in degrees Kelvin. Click the "Start" button to begin the simulation and the "Stop" button to end it. When the "On" button is clicked, plots of the number of A and the number of B molecules versus time are displayed along with the animation. When the simulation stops, the rate of consumption of A is displayed in the Table of Collected Data.

    Allow each animation to run for 10 seconds. Use the results from your experiments to answer the following questions. Include data from the experiments to support your answers.

  1. Does every collision between two A molecules result in the formation of a B molecule?
  2. How does the rate of consumption of A vary with the number of A molecules?
  3. How does the rate of consumption of A vary with the energy of activation,Ea?
  4. How does the rate of consumption of A vary with the temperature?
  5. What is required for product B to form?
